The essential features of the NWP Model include:
*The National Writing Project is a collaborative university-school partnership dedicated to improving the quality of student writing in the nation’s schools.
*The NWP is built on a model that identifies successful teachers of writing, brings these teachers together in invitational summer Institutes, and prepares them to teach other teachers in workshops that the project conducts in schools during the school year. Because each site prepares a new group of exemplary teachers each year, the core of teachers is constantly expanding.
*The NWP is a network of 195 local writing project sites in all 50 states plus D.C., Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Typically, each site is staffed with a university faculty director and a co-director, a successful and respected classroom teacher of writing.
*The NWP is a teacher-centered professional development project serving teachers and students at public and private institutions and at all levels of instruction through a teachers-teaching-teachers model.
*The NWP taps what is known about writing and the teaching of writing from all sources: key research findings, important books and articles, and, most importantly, the classroom practices of effective teachers.
